A Habit-Based Nutrition Program

As an experienced psychologist working from a foundation in health psychology and behavioral medicine, Dr. Weiss has a unique combination of skills and experience to work on motivation, identifying and challenging personal obstacles, self-awareness, breaking and developing habits, and understanding emotional behavior. Weiss Health Psychology and Family Building in Ridgewood, NJ offers nutrition coaching as an adjunct to psychotherapy or as a primary service.
This is a unique, habit-based program where you will learn habits and strategies that almost everyone can use to eat better. You will not be given a specific meal plan. You will start wherever you are at and make gradual, manageable changes, one habit at a time, to create healthy eating habits for life.
We will help you create a healthy relationship with food, including addressing emotional eating and mindset. Do you know when you are hungry and when you are satisfied? Do you know why you eat? Learn to listen to your body. Make better dining choices and eat more appropriate amounts. Feel satisfied by your meals and learn to be a little more consistent. Do just a little better, then a little better, then a little better. There’s no need to be perfect!
This program is workable with any personal food preferences or limitations, including vegetarian, vegan, paleo, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher, low carb, low fat, and more. It is also compatible with all food allergies and all intolerances.

FAQ's
What is Health Psychology?
Health Psychology uses understanding of emotions, habits, behaviors, motivation, and psychological techniques to help achieve health and wellness goals. Techniques include identifying obstacles and using problem solving to remove or work around them, identifying and working with your strengths and assets, helping develop desirable habits while reducing undesirable habits, strengthening motivation, understanding your health beliefs, and reframing circumstances. Cognitive behavioral techniques and cognitive restructuring are used. Of course, all of this is accomplished with the supportive, understanding care you would expect of a psychologist.
The only thing that will make me feel better is to get pregnant.
How can therapy help me?
How can therapy help me?
It is very common to become almost (or completely) obsessed with trying to become pregnant. After all, evolution has built this into our make up! Women frequently spend a lot of their time on the internet trying to find information or stories like their own. However, there is only so much that you can do while waiting for the next period, the next cycle, for test results, for a cyst to resolve, or for the fertility lab to open. It is common to feel helpless, or out of control in regard to your own life plans when the only goal is getting pregnant.
Therapy can help by making the wait and the journey more livable. While therapy may not help you have a baby sooner, it can help you take control of your reaction to the situation. Therapy can help you gain some perspective, and help you feel productive while you wait. Working with a professional, who has seen hundreds of patients go through it, can help you learn the most effective coping skills and a better mindset. Therapy can make you feel less alone, when it seems no one understands. It is a place you can be yourself and speak your mind without judgment. Coping with infertility takes stamina, flexibility and good tools. Support can make all the difference when you don’t know how or when you will get through it.

What will the first session be like?
In the first session, Dr. Weiss will listen carefully while taking a thorough history of your situation, and getting to know your personal history so that she can understand the big picture of what it means to you. She will pay close attention to your personality, noting aspects that will help, and what aspects may be limiting factors. You will be asked about the previous history of psychological symptoms and family history. If you have been to psychotherapy before, Dr. Weiss will learn what went well, and what you think would have been more helpful. You may be asked to complete symptom ratings as a screening. Then, before your leave the first session, you will be presented with an assessment and an individualized treatment plan of specific techniques Dr. Weiss will use to help you.
What techniques does Dr. Weiss use in therapy?
Dr. Weiss believes that the most important ingredient in therapy is to feel understood. When you are truly understood by someone who listens carefully, you are no longer alone. Your burden is shared. Dr. Weiss will offer support and help validate your experience and feelings. The next important ingredient in psychotherapy is helping you feel more in control about your situation, your life, and how you cope. Dr. Weiss will teach her signature model for choosing and utilizing the best coping strategies for any situation. She may teach you relaxation techniques such as abdominal breathing, muscle relaxation, imagery and meditation. You will learn a simple method of cognitive restructuring to address any counterproductive thoughts. She will help you learn how to deal with friends and family, how to balance work and fertility treatment, and how to face questioning of faith when life feels unfair. She will also help you survive holidays, baby showers, and nosy relatives!
Dr. Weiss will update you on the latest research about the relationship between stress and fertility, and help maximize your mindset for good coping.
You will determine how you use your psychotherapy time, and along the way, Dr. Weiss will make sure that she gets to know you and teaches her curriculum of effective coping skills.

How does nutrition coaching fit in with psychology?
There are so many facets to the relationship between psychology, mental health, and nutrition!
- Over time many people have learned that what they eat, and how much they eat, affects how they feel, not just physically, but mentally. Lifestyle behaviors such as diet, sleep and exercise certainly can affect mood, anxiety, and irritability.
- Nutrition coaching by a psychologist can be a unique experience. It is common that even when people know how they want to eat, they have trouble following through, or doing it consistently. A psychologist, who is a specialist in human emotions and behavior, can be helpful in understanding emotional eating, counterproductive mindsets, habit-building and habit-breaking, strategies and motivation. A psychologist can offer the supportive environment that will set you up for successful achievement of your eating and wellness goals.
- Nutrition coaching can also, itself, be a coping strategy. While facing other issues in life that make them feel helpless, some people benefit from being proactive about their eating habits. It gives them something else productive to focus on, and another way to feel more in control.
- Nutrition coaching may help people feel better about their bodies when medical issues, such an infertility or illness, have affected their body image.
- As more patients and professionals have become interested in the role that lifestyle factors may play in fertility, some patients want to maximize their nutrition habits in preparation for pregnancy or while recovering from pregnancy.
I am interested in eating better, but I am not looking for therapy, can I still be coached for nutrition?
Yes, of course, Kim Weiss will provide nutrition coaching as a stand-alone service to anyone who wants to work toward better eating habits.
